Where We Are Now

Here is where the garden is at now. We have three of the raised beds installed but not filled all the way yet. We went with the 12 inche deep beds so root vegetables have plenty of space to grow (looking forward to the carrots, potatoes, turnips, and sweet potatoes!) and so the tomatoes, etc, have a good base to defend from the wind. We get plenty of wind.

One of the things we were looking for was also kind a formal presentation. So there will be a linear walkway between the wall and the raised beds. Eventually it will be filled with (locally found) gravel. This kind of limits the options, but we did find three options and I am sure one of them will work.

  1. That is some amazing progress there! I really like the linear feel, but the curve afterwards. Almost like saying in form, here is for business, this is for pleasure. I like it!

And you won't regret the 12 inch deep ones either. Because the soil is so rich and uncompacted, your carrots and parsnips are going to be wonders. Mine last year were just shockingly lovely and large, but sweet.

Can't wait to see your green in there!

  2. Hey Christy!

Funny you get that feel, where the wall curves back there will be a sitting/work area, a place to go and relax a little and just enjoy the garden.

We are trying to create some fun little informal spaces kind of hidden away for the kids and us.

Nice to know someone else saw it!

  3. Looks fantastic! I can't wait to see it mid-summer when it's overflowing with delicious edibles!

I agree with Christy- you won't regret the deep raised beds. When I build more I'm considering making them 18" or 24". But our soil is really really really bad underneath, it used to be a parking pad for a big RV, so it's very compacted and full of gravel.
