When Cabbages Explode...

I have read that cabbages and other vegetables can actually explode if they get too much water all at once. I have seen tomatoes split, but I have never seen anything like this. the hydrostatic pressure must have been pretty intense to split that guy all way through! Try and take a nice fresh head of cabbage and tear it in half with your bare hands.

  3. @Chiot's Run - I hadn't seen it either. The head was mildly damaged by loopers, but we had cool and dry for a while followed by WET WET WET. Went out and there it was. I should cut it and compost it, but it looks kind of like a huge, horrible flower.

  4. Dang!! I did have a cabbage split on me last year but nothing like that!
I did have a reader of mine suggest that when they start to get to full size, you can either use a pitch fork to pull it up a little or twist the head a 1/4 turn to break some of the roots. Not enough to kill the plant, just enough that it stunts it's growth so it fills in slower.
Looks like you can grow really good cabbages though!

  6. This is cool. I was wondering what happened to my cabbages. Googled it and this was on the second page of results. First one that was relevant and you're and a fellow Chicagoan.

I lost 3 this way, and I had been giving them a lot of water at a time. At least now I know.

Oh by the way, hello from the future... still no flying cars.

  8. This happened to me, my cabbages were looking great and then we had a couple of weeks of heavy rain and then boom all of them either split or exploded.
